Why We Get Fat
This book, Why We Get Fat: And What To Do About It by Gary Taubes, is one of those "eye-opening, change the way you view almost everything" types of books. I read it because I'd heard it was good, but also I wanted some more scientific "back-up" for my new way of eating. I got that for sure, and so much more.
If you've ever struggled with your weight or if anyone you know/love has struggled with his/her weight, you should read this book. And since a huge majority of us are in that boat, I guess that means we should all read it. ;-)
Seriously, though. This book will turn everything you ever believed about weight loss on it's head. What it boils down to is this, the whole calories-in vs. calories-out is baloney. (That's my word, not his). We do not get fat because we eat too much and move to little. And we can't lose weight by eating less and moving more.
What? Huh? How is that possible? That's how everyone (doctors, the government, trainers, celebrities, mom/dad) says it's done. Well, my friends, it all boils down, once again, to carbohydrates. That, and faulty scientific studies telling us the way to go is eat low cal/low fat for our hearts and a whole bunch of other factors. There's no way I could explain it all here, but that's what this book is for.
So, if I've piqued your interest, by all means, go check this book out from the library, download it onto your kindle or hit the book exchange--however you get your books, get it. (I can loan it to ya for 14 days if you have a kindle). Get it and read it. Then come back and tell me what you think.

I've read it (well, listened to it) almost 3 times. I am definitely a Taubes fan, and I think he does great work. I'm a nutrition geek, but it took me a long time to really process the ideas he presents in the book and I have to say I don't think his carbohydrate hypothesis is entirely correct, but I did enjoy the book and I got a lot out of it =)
