Pacos

Today, I am going to show you another one of my family's favorite dinner's. We've been eating this for as long as I can remember and its one of my brother's top favorite meals I believe. In fact, you could probably make this and a chocolate pudding cake and he'd be in food heaven. I love that this is easy, economical and most everyone likes it. We call it, Pacos.

Pacos

You'll need:
2 loaves of frozen bread dough, thawed and risen
1 1/2 lbs of ground meat (we use hamburger, but turkey would work too)
1 packet of Lipton onion soup mix
shredded cheese

First, brown the meat.

And grate the cheese. I used sharp cheddar and some Gruyere, but use whatever you like. Maybe you need about 2 cups.

A note on the frozen bread dough. I love the Schwan's brand bread for this recipe. It works perfectly and I love that I can make half with white and half with whole wheat. BUT, any frozen bread dough would work. You'll need two loaves worth. I suppose you could make it from scratch too, but then this recipe wouldn't be super easy.

A note on the "Lipton Onion Soup Mix". I love this stuff, but have recently decided to stop buying it and using the minced onion you can by in the spice section instead. I hate that this soup mix has MSG in it. :-( So, feel free to punt with some minced onion, salt & pepper and whatever spice you'd like. Taco seasonings would work too.

After you've browned the meat (and drained any grease), add the soup mix/seasonings to the meat and stir to combine. Remove from heat.

Cut each loaf into equal parts, 4 to 6 per loaf. Flatten dough out on a couple cookie sheets.

Top with a little bit of the meat.

And cheese.

Now, fold over edges of dough, pinching closed and sealing the meat and cheese inside the dough.

Bake on a cookie sheet, with folded edge down, at 350 degrees until slightly browned on top. In my oven this takes about 20 minutes.

Brush with a little bit of butter.

We love to eat these dipped in ketchup with a big green salad on the side. Sometimes we even dip it in the ketchup and ranch mixed together. Yum!
These warm up really well as leftovers and are sure to please both adults and kiddos.

Enjoy!

  1. You know, if you google "homemade Lipton onion soup mix", you should be able to find a recipe for it that will get the job done. I had to find one because there are carbs in onion soup mix! ;-) Generally, beef bouillon granules, onion powder, minced dry onion and maybe a little garlic powder will approximate the taste pretty well!

I'll have to try this when I can eat bread again - I bet Roger would like it!

  2. Kendra, When I saw the word Paco it made me think of my girls. They had to eat Pacos at your moms house once and they hated them. I think it was Amy who was really mad about having to eat them. Just thought I would let you know, kind of funny! Love ya, Auntie V
